FAQ
1. What firmware will come pre-installed on my MINIX device?
Your MINIX NEO Series device should come with the latest available firmware pre-installed. You can check which firmware version you currently have installed by going to 'Settings' -> 'About Device' -> 'Vendor Software Version'. Our Dual-Core devices – NEO G4, X5 mini, X5 – come pre-installed with 720p FWs, however 1080p FWs are available to download from the MINIX Forum. Whilst, the NEO X7 mini and NEO X7 FWs use an ‘overlay’ technique built upon a 1080p kernel, whereby the user interface etc.. is displayed in 720p, however if 1080p media content is detected it will be displayed in Full 1080p HD resolution. Our latest Quad-Core devices – NEO X8 and NEO X8-H – are full 1080p FWs, and will play XBMC in Full 1080p HD resolution straight out of the box. 31. What is the difference between dual-core and quad-core MINIX devices?
All our devices deliver the same features; all can achieve Full HD playback, browse the web, real-time audio and video streaming, XBMC and IPTV capability, have access to Google Play Store, and include Screencast capability and AirPlay support. The main difference between dual-core and quad-core lies in gaming performance. Whilst all our media hubs can handle traditional popular Android games such as Angry Birds etc… our latest quad-core devices – the NEO X7 mini, X7, X8, X8-H – are built to handle the next generation of more graphic intensive Android games.
32. What is the difference between the 'full-size' and 'mini' MINIX devices?
NEO X5mini v NEO X5, NEO X7mini v NEO X7? what’s the difference? ... Well the answer is connectivity and memory. The ‘minis’ are scaled-down versions, offering less connectivity and memory but at a more affordable price. The NEO X5mini and X7mini offer one less USB port, no OTG port, no microphone or audio jack, and they also have only half the amount of internal memory – 8GB, compared to the 16GB available on the NEO X5 and X7. Other differences that should be noted is the NEO X5mini doesn’t have Bluetooth capability in contrast to the other three, and the NEO X7 is the only device to offer Dual-Band Wi-Fi (both 2.4GHz and 5GHz).
33. What is MINIX's policy regarding 'rooting' my device?
MINIX products are not warranted if the product is modified, rooted, altered or repaired without authorization by MINIX.
34. I have just received my MINIX device, how can I check if it is genuine or fake?
There are currently a lot of fake MINIX devices currently on the market, so it is important to be careful. As MINIX's reputation has grown and users have become familiar with the quality of our hardware and firmware, other non-reputable manufacturers have began copying/'cloning' our devices - making it difficult for customers to identify what is genuine and what is fake. The easiest way to ensure you receive a genuine MINIX device is to purchase from one of our MINIX Authorized Resellers, listed on our 'Where to Buy' page. Whilst other resellers may advise MINIX products and use MINIX photos for their advertising, we cannot guarantee what you actually receive will be a genuine MINIX device. To help identify genuine MINIX devices, our packaging for the MINIX NEO Series include a unique MINIX hologram, in addition to a specific serial number for your device.
